Potassium in fruits and vegetable: what patients with kidney disease should know
• The body of patients with chronic kidney disease will release potassium in blood less than those in good health.
• If patients have high potassium level in blood (greater than 5.5 ml/dL), it may cause an arrhythmia or the heart may stop beating
• If patients have high potassium level in blood, it is suggested to avoid eating the following fruits and vegetables including
o Ripe fruits and vegetable : banana, jackfruit and durian
o Fruits and vegetables with vivid colors as well as dark green : kale, broccoli, spinach, tomatoes, and carrots
o Root vegetables : potato, pumpkin, corn, and taro
o all fruit juice
o dried fruit
• They are able to take these following fruit that contains low potassium level, including
o light-colored vegetables : cucumber, lettuce, cabbage, zucchini
o Fruits : apple, pear, roseapple, pineapple
